Hot Cross Buns

These tasty treats are perfect warmed up for breakfast, dessert, appetizer or snack. Great idea for the Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp sugar
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 5 tbsp melted butter & cooled
  • 1 cup golden raisins, soaked in warm water for 30 minutes & drained
  • 1/4 (8 oz.) package of cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup confectionary sugar

  1. Spray large bowl with cooking spray or grease bowl
  2. Line 9 X 13 baking dish with parchment paper
  3. In small saucepan, heat milk over medium-high heat 3 minutes (temp should not be above 110 degrees)
  4. Whisk in yeast & 1 tbsp sugar; let stand for 5 minutes
  5. In stand mixer, whisk flour, cinnamon, salt & sugar
  6. Attach dough hook to mixer; add vanilla, eggs butter & yeast mixture
  7. Knead dough 3 minutes or until soft & dough come together
  8. Add raisins; knead dough 1 minute or until incorporated
  9. On lightly floured work surface, knead dough 1 minute or until smooth & elastic
  10. Form a ball & place in prepared bowl
  11. Cover with plastic wrap & let stand in warm place for about 1 hour or until dough has almost doubled in size
  12. On lightly floured surface, punch down dough; divide dough into 12 equal pieces
  13. Roll each piece into a ball & place in prepared dish; cover with plascit wrap & let stand for 30 minutes
  14. Preheat oven to 350 degrees; remove plastic wrap & bake 45 minutes or until golden brown
  15. In medium bowl; stir in cream cheese & confectionary sugar
  16. Transfer cream cheese into small zip-top plastic bag. Snip bottom corner of bag
  17. When buns are cool, pipe cream cheese mixture over buns to create a cross
